What does beta testing involve?
Our beta testers get the opportunity to use brand new, unreleased products - both hardware and software - with their own setups long before they are available to the public.
A crucial part of beta testing is discovering and reporting any bugs you find. Beta testing also provides a chance to help shape the development of the products, by discussing feature requests and other ideas within the beta testing group, while the product itself is still under development.
We run our beta tests in small private groups. This gives our beta testers a great opportunity to discuss their ideas and feedback with each other as well as with members of the QA team.
Is beta testing right for me?
If you have a passion for audio and music technology, an eye for detail and an analytical approach to problem solving then beta testing could be something you really excel at.
As a beta tester, it helps to have a good understanding of your existing setup and the ability to clearly describe what you observe when using the beta products. Gathering bug reports, feature requests and other observations from our beta testers is key to a successful and productive project.
Beta products are unfinished. By their very nature this does mean the products being tested will be likely to contain bugs, some features won't yet be implemented, and they will generally not be suitable for use in time-critical work.
How much time do I need to set aside for beta testing?
You won't need to set aside any time right away. If we choose you as a prospective beta tester for a project, we will contact you by email to check your availability before confirming your selection.
Our beta tests vary in length depending on the complexity of the product being tested, but on average will tend to run for between two and four months. When you are participating in a beta test the main priority is to remain active throughout the project. Most of your time beta testing will be spent using the device under test with your existing setup.
During a beta test, it is good to aim for an average of an hour a day, but this can vary depending upon the complexity of the product you are testing and the frequency of new driver / firmware updates to test as the project progresses. It is also important to set aside a few minutes each day to read any announcements from the QA team, other beta testers' bug reports and feedback, and to write-up your own bug reports and feedback for the group.
How do you select people for specific beta tests?
We select people based upon their existing use of products and the type of interests they have in audio and music technology. If someone has been productive in previous beta tests, that greatly increases their chances of selection for future beta tests.
You ask about lots of different equipment in the sign-up form, but I hardly have any! Can I still beta test for you?
Yes, absolutely! It is vital that we have a broad range of beta testers to choose from, with different setups, experience and requirements. Your passion and enthusiasm for using the equipment you have is what is most important to us.
I work solely with iOS/iPadOS devices to make music. Can I still beta test for you?
Yes, you can. We have beta testing opportunities for mobile-based users across several of our product lines. Access to a computer is often useful for some features, but if your music-making setup is based solely around iOS/iPadOS devices, you can still sign-up to beta test for us.
Once I've signed up, what happens next?
We will store your details in our database and use them to help us select appropriate beta testers for new projects. If we select you for a specific project, we will contact you by email.
Am I guaranteed to be selected for a beta test?
We can't guarantee that anyone will be selected for a beta test, but if your current setup and experience matches the requirements for a project, we'll be in touch!
For which kinds of products do you run beta tests?
We run beta tests for all our product ranges, both hardware and software.
I have done beta testing for other companies. Can I also beta test for you?
Yes, please be sure to let us know about your other beta testing experience on the sign-up form.
I am employed by another audio industry company. Can I still beta test for you?
Potentially, but please let us know about any affiliation with other audio industry companies on the sign-up form. We will use this information to ensure there is no conflict of interest when selecting beta testers for specific projects.
Can I request to beta test a specific product?
No, we make the decisions about who to select for each beta test ourselves. We select beta testers based upon their existing experience and setups, so by providing us with information about your interests and setup, you will increase your chances of being selected for beta tests of the new products that most interest and inspire you.
How often do you run beta tests?
There is no set schedule, but we run beta tests for all our new products and updates to existing products.
I already completed the sign-up form. How can I review the info on my beta testing profile?
If you use the same web browser and device that you used when you last completed the form, you may be able to see your currently stored data. If you are unable to view your currently stored data, you can send a request for it to be emailed to you by contacting: beta.testers@focusrite.com
How do I update the details on my beta tester profile?
If you use the same device and web browser that you used when you last completed the form, you may be able to see your currently stored data. You can then change any of the information on there as necessary before resubmitting it.
If you are unable to view your currently stored data, you can still update any sections as necessary by completing the required fields plus any parts that you want to change, then resubmitting the form.
Alternatively, you can email details of any changes you'd like to make to: beta.testers@focusrite.com and we'll update your profile for you.
I no longer wish to beta test and would like my details removed from your beta testing database. How do I do this?
Please email: beta.testers@focusrite.com with a request to remove your beta testing profile. We will delete all your stored data and email you to confirm once it has been removed.
